The Practical Guide: How to find your ring size without mistakes?

Ordering a ring online is always exciting, until doubt sets in: "Did I choose the right size?". Between at-home measurements and international standards, it's easy to get lost.

1. The 3 reliable methods to do at home

Method A: The diameter of an existing ring (The most accurate)

If you already have a ring that fits perfectly on the intended finger:

  1. Grab a millimeter ruler.

  2. Measure the inner diameter (do not account for the metal thickness).

  3. Refer to the conversion chart at the bottom of the page: a diameter of 17.2 mm corresponds, for example, to a size 54.

Method B: Measuring the circumference (The DIY method)

If you don't have a ring on hand:

  1. Wrap a string or a strip of paper (less than 1 cm wide) around the base of your finger.

  2. Mark where the string meets.

  3. Measure the distance between the end and your mark with a ruler.

  4. The calculation is simple: if you measure 5.2 cm, your size is 52.

Method C: The virtual ring sizer

Many sites and apps (like Ring Sizer) allow you to place your ring directly on the screen to find the matching size. Warning: always check your screen calibration with a credit card or a coin before starting.

2. Golden rules for a successful measurement

The size of your fingers changes due to several factors. To avoid mistakes, keep these points in mind:

  • Time of day: Measure your finger in the late afternoon/evening. That's when it's most swollen. A measurement taken in the morning upon waking may be too small.

  • Temperature: Cold makes fingers shrink, heat makes them swell. Take your measurements in a room at ambient temperature.

  • The knuckle: If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose an intermediate size. The ring should resist slightly when passing the knuckle so it won't slip off later.

  • Left hand vs Right hand: We are not symmetrical! Your right ring finger is often slightly larger than your left if you are right-handed. Measure precisely the finger that will wear the jewelry.
